Community Service

Community service in its ideal form is a way of doing something positive for the community. It is a way of making the community a better place for everyone. Serving in community addresses many grass roots problems that fall through the cracks of government and social agencies. As well as, it takes away from the problems that exist in the society and in the world as a whole.

With a hope of fulfilling these aspects, IEEE EMB Student Club of IIT Kharagpur conducts various training and awareness programs to the community within the vicinity of the institution. The club ensures and facilitates the service to the society with the potentials in terms of technical assistance, health camp, book donation, teaching outreach programs, etc. The club has so far conducted community programs; book donation and health camp in between the last four months. Community Service Program participants volunteer to work with organizations like IEEE Kharagpur section, LIONS Club of Kharagpur Town, Society of School of Medical Science and Technology with the aim to address community needs.

Performing community service can have other appeals as well, which are less altruistically oriented. These are great experiences and we need to see them bloom in small and large communities all across the nation. If we can approach community service, and raise the standard so maybe the everyday people can once again rise to the heroic levels that are so badly needed to turn around the world and make it better.

Activities

Activities in community service incorporate organizing free health check up camp, book donation camp and so on for the people, who are lacking modern facilities of health, education etc. To fulfill this aim; we took our first step by organizing a free health check up camp on the 63rd Independence Day of India (15th August, 2009) at Bhavatarini Mandir, Paanch Pir Maidan near Railway Gardens in Kharagpur. The main motive of that Health Camp was to provide free health check-up and also to provide medical consultation on health and hygiene to the poor and deprived class of the society. Later, on 12th September, 2009, we successfully organized a book donation camp for the school children at Paljhari village (7km interior from IIT Kharagpur). It was aimed to assist the poor children through providing exercise books, pencils, erasers and discussing their problems regarding academics and to be acquainted with their living condition. Future plans

As far as we have organized one health check up camp and one book donation camp, we came to know about their problems regarding education and living conditions. Based on that knowledge, we plan to organize more camps in coming days to overcome the barriers and to enrich their lives so that they can dream about their life as well as our nation. In future, we are also planning to organize awareness camps to bridge up the causes that make them a part of the primitive class, so that they can elevate themselves both educationally and socially to become a part of a developing nation.
